Expatriates find Philippines Top Choice
Survey of expats finds the Philippines the favorite in spite of continuing economic and political problems
The Philippines ranks as the favorite place for expats living in Asia to live, according to a survey conducted by the Political and Economic Risk Consultancy. The Philippines was followed closely by Singapore and Japan.

The survey was conducted among 500 expatriates living in Asia, primarily Australians, Americans and Europeans.

With the lowest score being the best, the Philippines scored 3.27, receiving top grades for: expats being able to interact with the local population, access to recreational activities, value-for-money housing and 'excellent' nightlife. Negative features were heavy traffic and poor security.

Closely following the Philippines was Singapore. long regarded as a 'dull' place to live by expatriates. However, in this survey, it was praised for efforts of the government to make the island-state more livable, and high scores for housing, recreation, health care facilities and personal security.

Japan was rated as having a high standard of living but expensive, and the biggest complaint was lack of recreational facilities. However, the fascinating culture and 'vibrant' nightlife were rated highly.

Two Asian countries slipping in the poll were Malaysia and Thailand. Security was a major concern in Malaysia, where robberies have become common, and Thailand was seen at improving its economy at the cost of the quality of life. Survey participants noted deterioration in 'the physical environment.'

Ranking just ahead of Thailand was Taiwan. Rounding out the bottom of the list were South Korea and Vietnam.
