London, Oct 24: New gadgets coming into the market have an ever increasing power demand, and engineers have been engaged in the process of increasing the battery life of the gadgets. But now engineers at Apple Corporation in California are trying to save power in electrical gadgets by making them to go into sleep mode, and to light up only when a human finger comes close to it. The new technology is being targeted for use in iPods, PDAs, cameras and even in PCs. The screen of the gadget has a built-in capacitive sensor and when a finger comes to within about 10 millimetres, the electrical capacitance changes and trips a finely tuned circuit. The device then wakes from sleep mode, lights up its screen and displays a menu of touch sensitive controls. When the finger moves away again, the screen stays on for a preset period of time, after which it shuts down again to conserve power, reports New Scientist. As the sensor of the gadget requires a human finger to come close to it, the device won't be accidentally activated while it is kept in pocket.
