Parasitic cell phone that still works after its battery goes dead

London, Oct 17: Motorola is working on a new technology that would allow their phone users to keep in touch with friends and family members even after the phone battery has run out, by becoming a parasite on neighbouring phones using Bluetooth technology. When the battery of the cell phone gets down to a certain point, the phone switches off all non-essential functions (like dialling and texting) and finds a compatible phone within Bluetooth range to use as a proxy, reports New Scientist. The low-battery phone will then send a Bluetooth message to the nearby phone, asking for its permission to act as a proxy. If given, the failing device will use that new phone as a relay to send an SMS message to everyone on the emergency contact list. All in-coming calls will be blocked and SMS will be the only medium of communication, and that too through the proxy phone.
