The Stock Exchange of Thailand is expected to reopen on Thursday (Sept 21) following a bloodless overnight coup, senior assistant secretary general of the country's Securities and Exchange Commission Pravej Ongartsittigul said. 'I think there will be a reopening (of markets) tomorrow. I'm quite positive,' XFN-Asia quoted Pravej as saying. He said that SEC secretary general Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala was now leaving Shanghai to return to Thailand for en emergency meeting of officials. 'I know only what is reported on CNN and know that Khun Thirachai will fly back,' Pravej said. 'He just called me.' Thirachai and Pravej are in Shanghai for a meeting of securities market regulators from emerging markets. Thirachai is Asia-Pacific region chairman of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). Pravej could not provide any details regarding any possible action to be taken by the Thai SEC, although he said that things in the country were relatively calm and that the regulator was unlikely to take any extraordinary measures.
