Thailand strikes gold on opening day of WTF
Bangkok, Sept 15: Rapatkorn Prasopsuk has landed a gold medal for Thailand on the opening day of the World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships (WTF) on Thursday.

Rapatkorn, who is Asian champion in the women's heavyweight category, got off to a good start beating Croatian Iskra Knezevic 3-0 to move into the second round. She marched into the semifinal with an equally impressive win over Russian Maria Konyakhina, beating her 3-0.

The Thai competitor's next opponent, Jordan's Nadin Dawani, was much tougher and Rapatkorn needed all the support she could get from the packed crowd at the Indoor Stadium. Dawani put up a great fight, but the Thai star came through to win 5-3 much to the delight of the crowd.

In the final she faced Korean Jung Yoon-Jang. The two fought out a 2-2 draw in regulation time after which Rapatkorn won 1-0 in the sudden death, reports Xinhua.

Some 250 players from 40 countries and regions are participating in the five-day event. Of the participants, Turkey sent the biggest team of 35 members, followed by China with 27. The host Thailand is represented by a strong squad of 12 led by Patiwat Thongsalab, a gold medalist at last year's World University Games, and Yaowapa Boorapolchai, a bronze medalist at the Athens Olympics.
