Bill Clinton to make final visit to tsunami-affected countries as U.N. envoy

Bangkok, Nov 29: Former American President Bill Clinton will pay a final visit to tsunami devastated areas in Tamil Nadu, Thailand and Indonesia next month as Secretary General Kofi Annan's special envoy for tsunami recovery. Clinton ends his two-year term on December 31 next, coinciding with the laying down of office by Kofi Annan. Annan had appointed him envoy to give high profile to the efforts after tsunami on December 24, 2004 killed an estimated 200,000 people and did extensive damage. During his tour, President Clinton will review progress in the tsunami recovery efforts over the last two years, visiting new permanent homes and schools. He will also focus on programmes that he has advocated for and coordinated over the last two years, including efforts to promote equity and empower communities to take charge of their own development, restoring livelihoods and promoting disaster resilience and disaster risk reduction. He will also tour locations where the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (Chai) operates, reports Zee News.
