Vehicle exports up by over 29%

Bangkok, Sept 27: In the first eight months of this year, Thailand has exported 353886 vehicles an increase of 29.17% compared with the same period in 2005, industry sources said. A total of 796,552 vehicles were assembled locally between January and August this year, of which 442,666 units were sold on the domestic market, up 1.7 per cent year-on-year, said the Federation of Thai Industries' automotive club. The exports segment of the vehicles market fared better. The 353,886 exported vehicle, mostly comprising of one-ton pickup trucks, earned Thailand 155.3 billion baht , an increase of 23.35 percent, reports DPA. Thailand often called the "Detroit of Southeast Asia" because of the number of multinational automobile companies that have set up factories in the country - assembled more than 1 million vehicles last year, and has set a target of 1.3 million units for 2006.
