Singapore, Australia Exchanges to develop Electronic Link
New electronic link between two stock exchanges will allow cross trading of stocks by 2001
An historic agreement to develop an electronic link for cross trading of stocks by 2001 has been signed by the Singapore Exchange (SGX) and the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX).

The link will facilitate the trading, settlement and holdings of SGX quoted securities by Australian investors and the same for ASX-quoted securities by Singapore investors.

When the link is established, most likely by July, 2001, investors in Singapore and Australia can buy and sell equity securities in each others market, in their own currency utilizing stock brokers in their own country. The agreement will bring SGX and the ASX closer towards a trading and settlement that will increase the depth and liquidity of each market.

The number of companies that will be involved with the link, but ASX chairman Maurice Newman said it would be around 30 from each country. The rules of country where the stock is initially listed will govern the trade.

Both exchanges see the deal as beneficial to each and hope that the agreement can progress from a bilateral to a multilateral one.

There are many smaller exchanges in Asia, such as Thailand and Malaysia, for example, that could benefit from signing up with Singapore and Australia.
