Asia continues to go online faster than any other part of the world according to the market research firm Nielsen/Net Ratings. People in Asia went online with web access growing 5.6 percent in the last three months of 2001 over the previous quarter. The total number connecting to the web has neared the half billion mark and at this writing is probably over it. Europe was next in line with connections rising 4.9 percent, followed by Latin America and the United States at 3.3 percent and 3.5 percent respectively. North America continued to have the largest share of the global Internet audience at 40 percent while Europe, Middle East and Africa accounted for 27 percent and Asia 22 percent. In Asia, Singapore had the highest access rate with 60 percent of the households wired. South Korea and Hong Kong ranked second and third at 58 and 56 percent respectively. India came in last with only seven percent of the households using the Internet. In Asia age appeared to have no bearing on whether or not a household was on the Internet while in Europe and Latin America Internet usage is more likely to occur if the head of household is 35 or younger. In Asia education is the more likely determinant as men with university degrees are usually the ones to have Internet access.
