Coup hasn't hurt growth prospects: IMF
Bangkok, Oct 6: The IMF has said that last month's military coup in
Thailand won't be affecting the growth prospects for Southeast Asia's
second- largest economy.

A spokesperson for the IMF revealed that the organization has kept its
projections for Thailand's growth unchanged at 4.5 percent this year
and 5 percent in 2007. Growth last year was 4.5 percent.

"The reaction of markets has been relatively calm. Economic prospects
are overall quite favorable if the political situation remains
stable," Bloomberg quoted spokesman Masood Ahmed as saying in
Washington.

Junta leader Sondhi Boonyarataklin ousted Prime Minister Thaksin
Shinawatra's caretaker government on Sept. 19, accusing it of
corruption. Thailand's $189 billion economy slowed as government
spending stalled after Thaksin dissolved parliament in February.

Central bank Governor Pridiyathorn Devakula earlier today said the
economy will grow about 4.5 percent this year, supported by an
increase in exports. The central bank has quadrupled borrowing costs
since August 2004 to keep inflation in check.
