Bangkok, Nov 12: Suspected militants killed two Thai policemen on Saturday in the latest violence in the rebellious south despite peace initiatives from the post-coup government. Up to 10 militants fired on the soldiers as they rode their motorcycle in Y-ala, one of three southernmost provinces where a separatist insurgency has killed more than 1,800 people in the last two years. The attackers fled with the officers' guns after killing them. "They took two rifles and a pistol after the attack," said a Yala police official. It was earlier reported that entire Buddhist community in two villages in the majority Muslim province of Yala have abandoned their homes and have no intention of returning for fear of attacks. About 52 families, have taken refuge in a nearby Buddhist temple of Nirotsangkha-ram over the past two days. Many have brought only the bare necessities with them, relying on the generosity of the local population for food.
