Suvarnabhumi airfreight complaints go to government

BANGKOK, Feb 7 - The Thai Airfreight Forwarders Association (TAFA) will submit a list of airfreight problems found at Suvarnabhumi Airport to the government for short- and long-term solutions, TAFA
chairman Kovit Thanyarattakul said here Tuesday. Mr. Kovit said since the moving of Bangkok's international airport from Don Muang to Suvarnabhumi in September, the airfreight forwarders as well as importers and exporters had faced 50 per cent higher
costs. The higher overhead came from various factors including the greater distance to Suvarnabhumi Airport compared with Don Muang Airport, which forced the companies to pay more allowances to their staff, he
said. Office space rental and services fees at Suvarnabhumi Airport were also 30 per cent higher than at Don Muang, he said. Mr. Kovit said the TAFA is collecting more detailed information on the problems and will submit its list of concerns and obstacles to the government for consideration to seek a solution. He also complained about inconveniences and management at Suvarnabhumi's free zone area, which he said does not provide one-stop service like that at Don Muang previously and which caused unnecessary
delays to freight services. Freight forwarding services should not be moved back to Don Muang, Mr. Kovit said, as the Customs Department has to find sufficient staff to man its services at Don Muang, and the cargo volume would be not high enough to warrant the added service. (TNA)
